I can’t believe 2022 is here, especially as a mom and business owner in a pandemic. Wow, where does the time go? Sometimes the year feels sooo long and other days like I blinked and it’s over.
In any case, I love to take time at the end of the year to reflect. Not only for business purposes, but also where I am with my family, my health, and my personal goals. I give myself space to celebrate my accomplishments and dream big for the year ahead.
I recognize that all of my thoughts and accomplishments here come with an incredible amount of privilege. I have a supportive spouse with a flexible schedule along with in-person learning for my daughters. No matter where you’ve been this past year, I know it has come with a variety of challenges, some of which were more severe than others.
As always, take what is helpful to you and leave the rest.
Below are some of the biggest lessons I learned during a pandemic.
- Improving my habits was a theme during 2021, even if I didn’t plan to do that. Habits are powerful. Whichever ones you decide to embrace will show their results in the long term. Even though work-life balance is overrated (more on that here), there are ways you can take care of yourself and your business.
Choose habits that may seem hard in the moment, but have a payoff in the longer term. Here is what I mean:
This year, I chose to add movement to my daily life. Whether it was a full workout with a trainer, a 20-minute yoga video from Yoga with Adriene (on YouTube), or going for a walk, I did it. I moved. Both my body and my mind were better for it.
I didn’t notice the changes right away, and it was certainly hard to make the decision each day to get my workout clothes on, but I showed up. As the weeks went by, I noticed my mood and even my body change. My flexibility increased and so did my energy levels.
Overall I started to feel better in my own skin. Not to impress or please anyone else, but to feel good for me. Now it’s such a habit that I don’t want to miss it (some days more than others..). I crave that time to myself and also as an energetic stress reliever.
- Writing is another habit that is now stronger than ever. I continued to journal in 2021 and now write daily. Whether it’s 2 pages or 10, I sit down with my Artist’s Way journal and instrumental music playing to record my thoughts and reflect on whatever is on my mind.
It took a while to get used to writing every day. In the beginning, I forced myself to sit down even if I didn’t know what to write. Now, journaling is its own form of meditation and I find it to be incredibly therapeutic.
There is no judgment, only putting pen to paper and writing anything that comes to mind. Sometimes it’s about business, other times it’s about life. In the end, it empties from my head and onto the paper as a way to process what’s on my mind.
Above all, I learned during this year’s pandemic:
- If it feels comfortable, you aren’t challenging yourself.
Major growth comes from change. You’ve likely heard that if you want to reach your big goals, you need to become your future self. Similar to the ‘what got you here won’t get you there’ type of thinking.
I recognized that in the latter part of 2021 and started making bigger changes in my business. I started showing up in new ways, ones that felt aligned to who I am and also felt a bit uncomfortable. Because really, if it feels comfortable, it isn’t bringing about the change you are seeking.
These were my biggest insights from this year. Yours will likely be different. We’re all on our own path and I certainly don’t want this to be taken as preachy or that you need to do the same things I do. I am a huge advocate for figuring out what works best for you.
Personally, I believe the movement and journaling habits that I listed above had a lot to do with me recognizing that I was ready for bigger changes in my business.
It takes time, and it might feel hard, but your own self-discovery will pay off in the long run.
That’s what 2021 felt like to me – a year of self-discovery.
Wishing you all the best in 2022!
