Jalpa Pandit, owner of Jalpa Pandit Jewelry, creates custom jewelry and redesigns old family heirlooms into modern masterpieces. Jalpa’s eye for design and experience as a gemologist makes her work unique and special for every client. I interviewed Jalpa and went behind the scenes of designing jewelry and also learn a few tips about taking care of your jewelry at home.
What does your business do and who do you do it for?
I design and customize fine jewelry for women that are looking for something “new” with a current trend and suited to their aesthetic.
Why did you start your business? Share your story.
I was running the overseas Product Development for David Yurman in Asia & Europe for 7 years and the traveling 3-4 times a year over the course of 7 years had me burnt out…and I was having a very hard time getting pregnant. At first I quit – took a break, and started a B2B consulting business and continued to consult in a technical capacity servicing big firms like Tiffany and Hearts on Fire. (I did get pregnant) but then my priorities changed and it also hit me – I should use my expertise and skills to do something more meaningful and creative. Often times, my friends would appreciate the jewelry I was wearing and would ask me to get the same thing made for them and I would always encourage them to “salvage” what they owned and get creative towards a new piece. This is how my business niche was created. Over the past (almost) two years, my before and after transformations have led to several customers leads only via word of mouth and referrals, and that has been so rewarding.
What is your favorite gem / stone and why?
My favorite gemstone is the Emerald. In addition to being an exquisite green color, the beauty of this gem lies in all of its imperfections! Almost all natural Emeralds have inclusions inside the crystal and these are known as “Jardin” (garden in French) and nature has made each stone unique from the other!
What tips do you have for taking care of your jewelry?
During times of COVID, I get this question asked a lot!
The best homemade jewelry cleaning solution is a mixture of a few drops of Dawn dish detergent in warm, (not hot, water). Let your piece sit in the solution for a few minutes, longer if it’s very dirty, then gently scrub with a soft bristle toothbrush. Rinse under tap water gently and pat dry with a cotton cloth.
What has been your biggest challenge with entrepreneurship?
Being an entrepreneur is a lonely journey and unless you find a tribe of like minded, equally driven people around you, it’s hard to always stay motivated.
However, when that changes, the energy that you can harness from one another is incredible & empowering and pretty endless in terms of possibilities!
What piece of advice do you have for anyone starting out with their own business?
Believe in yourself and go at it 100% it is not a race but a marathon. I have always been mindful of my competition but I never get distracted by it because everyone started at the beginning and it takes time, patience and a lot of hard work to get “there”.
When you’re not running your business, how do you spend your time
With my husband and son!
It took me 7 long years to have a baby so I count each moment as a blessing and try and savor every tiny experience with my son. Sometimes being at some of these kiddie activities is painfully boring (with women I have nothing in common with) but I try and remind myself to be as ON as I can be since the days are long and the years are short.
